Frederik Mohrmann

Frederik has a Master’s degree aerospace engineering, with a specialization in flight operations and safety. In addition, Frederik has extensive research experience in the field of human factors, aviation psychology and human performance. At the Netherlands Aerospace Center (NLR) he is currently spearheading NLR research and development program for EBT, which supports best-practice implementation of EBT and CBTA.
Frederik has presented at numerous aviation training, engineering and safety conferences, including a keynote address for best paper at the European Association for Aviation Psychology, and presentations at the Resilience Engineering Association (REA), AIAA, TU Delft symposia, national aviation congresses and many smaller seminars. In his spare time he is a glider and aerobatics instructor.
The Global EBT Review 2020
Evidence Based Training (EBT) has been a firm subject of aviation training innovation in recent years. EBT and other variants of Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) bring the promise of enhanced operator resilience, pilot-tailored training and new training methods such as ABLE (Aviation Blended Learning Environment). However, with EBT featuring such a turnkey role for innovation in aviation training, where does the industry stand now, in adopting EBT?
Building on decades of R&D experience in aviation training, the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) is investigating how the global airline industry is shifting to this new training philosophy, and how adoption can be further stimulated. NLR’s initiative for a Global EBT Review intends to facilitate exactly this by creating an open platform for exchanging adoption experiences across the globe, to help operations begin with or evolve an EBT program, and help regulators provide effective oversight.
This review, distributed globally as an online survey, will collect EBT implementation approaches, benefits, pitfalls and change experiences, and will collect the various perspectives of pilots, instructors, training managers and regulators. The survey will also examine which insights are most valuable as feedback to the industry, maximizing its relevance to the industry,
In addition to the direct training benefits of EBT/CBTA, it and related innovations come at a time when innovation in training may be more needed than ever before. The global recession in flight operations due to Covid-19 is pressuring our industry to rethink our approach to training, and consider innovative training solutions – both from the perspective of cost-/resource-efficiency, and from the perspective of an opportunity window for change.
This presentation will provide the first public presentation of the survey results, in order to provide operators with useful handles to surmount the current crisis, and make a meaningful change in their pilot training.
